On May 5th at Smolak Farms, the North Andover Historical Society honored Michael with the Society’s Lifetime Preservation Award. The Lifetime Preservation Award was established in 2014 to honor North Andover residents who have shown an exemplary commitment to the preservation of the town’s historic heritage and/or open spaces. Here is what the North Andover Historical Society said about Michael's impact on the local community. "Michael lives at the family farm acquired by his grandparents in 1927. After his father’s death in 1971, he ran the farm with his mother part time while in college. He has run it full [...]
Our work as stewards of the land is our passion and always ongoing. We are excited to announce exciting news about Small Oxx Farm! Small Oxx Farm, located between Ipswich Road and Main Streets in Boxford, consists of approximately 50 acres of land. Of that land, approximately 10 acres is flat growing land, 15 acres is recently cleared land, and 25 acres is woodland with varying topography. It was purchased in 2004 from the Estate of Otis Curtis through and with concurrence of his daughter Janis Bailey. What was important to Otis and his family was that the property be [...]
Our Animal Family is Growing!
Welcome to the family! Some adorable creatures arrived this spring! The ancestors of these Sebastopol Geese are from Crimea, and we are honored to bring a part of the Ukrainian culture into our Animal family. They are a bit tuckered out after their long journey to North Andover, so they will be tended to with love and care by our team before we introduce them to the rest of our animal friends and guests. Growing our farm and our animal community is a priority for us! We are pleased to announce that despite rising prices and inflation, we are able [...]
Reflections on a Great Fall Weekend
A note from Farmer Smolak as this fall season wraps up... This year has been an incredible one for our apple crop. With the season nearing it's end and Veteran's day around the corner, we decided to combine our apple excess with this celebratory day, and offer a free peck back of apples to all veterans and active-duty military. We scheduled this promotion to run over two weekends, October 23-24 and October 30-31. Last weekend we kicked off the first of our two military weekends, and had a wonderful turnout of veterans and active military at the farm. They came [...]
Farmer Smolak update: August 2021
Hello Smolak Farms family! Can you believe it’s already August?! This summer is surely flying by. It has been a busy one here, and if we haven’t seen you yet, we hope we will before it’s back-to-school time, temps are dropping, days shortening, and the fall season settling back in. It certainly seems like summer just began, and yet here it is almost passing us by! A lot has been going on at the farm. We had one of our biggest strawberry crops ever, a long and abundant cherry-picking season, and now we’re working our way through PYO blueberries, raspberries, [...]
Fields of 1,000 Hearts
We're so excited to share a new installation at the farm, inspired by our 'Strawberry Fields Forever' Strawberry Festival theme this year. Our new 'Field of 1,000 Hearts' covers a portion of the farm with exactly 1,000 red and pink wooden hearts. It's a beautiful backdrop for fun summer photos, and we've decided to make it a philanthropic event as well. There will be a $2 entrance fee for each person wishing to use the Field of 1,000 hearts for photos. All of the proceeds from each month's entrance fees will be collected in a large mailbox staked by the [...]
