Smolak Farms is seeking a dependable, animal-loving team member to help support the daily care and management of our Animal Playground. This role combines hands-on animal care with guest interaction and educational engagement in a unique farm setting.

Our animal area is home to more than 70 animals, including European fallow deer, goats, sheep, pigs, alpacas, rabbits, and several species of birds.

Responsibilities

Daily care and management of animals, including:

  • Feeding and watering animals
  • Cleaning cages, enclosures, and surrounding areas
  • Monitoring animal health and coordinating with veterinarians as needed
  • Supporting enrichment activities and basic training
  • Maintaining exhibits and animal environments
  • Managing hay/grain inventory and ordering supplies
  • Assisting with exhibit improvements and special projects
  • Supporting positive guest interaction and educational experiences
  • Maintaining cleanliness and safety throughout the animal area

Schedule & Compensation

  • Approx. 20 hours per week
  • Weekday and weekend availability required
  • Hourly rate: $16–$18/hour, based on experience
  • Additional agricultural work opportunities may be available
  • Performance review after 30 to 90 days

Requirements

Candidates should be:

  • Self-motivated and dependable
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions (including winter)
  • Able to lift 50+ pounds
  • Detail-oriented and able to follow instructions carefully
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communicators with a positive attitude toward guest interaction

Preferred (but not required):

  • Experience in livestock or domestic animal care
  • Coursework in biology, zoology, or related fields
  • Experience with exhibit maintenance or animal enrichment

Physical Expectations

This role includes:

  • Walking and standing for extended periods
  • Repetitive motion tasks
  • Lifting and carrying supplies
  • Climbing and general outdoor labor
