2019-11-14T10:29:54-05:00November 12th, 2019|Farmer Smolak, Uncategorized|

The Changing of Seasons at Smolak The apples are off the trees and the frost has fallen on the few remaining pumpkins. This fall we were very fortunate with the weather and had a busy and consistent season. At a farm like ours, we are very dependent on these weekends in September and October to create a positive balance sheet ahead of the slower winter months. We had some challenges to deal with in 2019 besides the weather in terms of being very affected by the gas crisis as well as some structural and permitting issues, so we're glad to [...]

Fall on the Farm and Halloween Hayrides The warmth of summer is quickly turning into the cool crisp autumn that many of us New Englanders love. We have been very lucky with the weather this year, as it has been bright and sunny, especially on the weekends. Apple picking has brought in many folks to pick pumpkins and enjoy all of the other offerings the farm provides this time of year. Our Halloween Character Hayride is in full swing with Bert and Ernie, Big Bird and many others greeting children and Trick or Treaters as they ride through the Farm. [...]

Farmer Smolak Update: September 2019

2019-10-08T12:15:55-05:00September 26th, 2019|Farmer Smolak|

Fall is here, and so are our Fall Festivals! We are in the early-to-mid stages of apple season, and this year's crop is fantastic. The amount of rain, sunshine, and culture this year have given us one of the best crops we’ve ever experienced. Our peach and blueberry crops were also some of the best we’ve had this year. What a season it has been! We introduced a new Beer, Wine, and Food Tent to our fall festivals this year, and the addition has been very well received. Last week, we added a 10-foot screen to the tent for loyal Patriots [...]

Fall is coming! As summer starts to wind down, we’re enjoying an abundant, very sweet and very tasty crop of peaches and plums. We’ll soon wrap-up our successful Whim Dinner Series, and while it’s always bittersweet to move out of this season, we have much to look forward to. The apple trees are laden with fruit, and in fact due to ample rain, heat and sunshine these last months, it looks to be one of the best apple crops we’ve ever had!   Our animal area has some new additions, including Australian Swans, Nubian goats, Heritage Breeds of Turkeys, and Muscovey [...]

Mid-Summer Updates: Staff, Crops, Whim and More The summer is passing quickly, and soon there will be the feel of fall in the air. The crops are growing well, and the peach and apple crops especially look wonderful this year. We should have a heavy apple crop this fall! Early crops faced some challenges this year with the weather, but we’re finally moving out of that season and into a more abundant one.   We’re excited to welcome some new faces into various roles at Smolak Farms, and familiar faces into new positions! Tricia Dunphy, who has been busy in [...]

Farmer Smolak Update: June 2019

2019-07-06T08:50:47-05:00June 11th, 2019|Farmer Smolak, News and Announcements|

Whim Dinner Series kicks off this week! With spring comes eternal optimism and a look towards the future. The weather this spring has been difficult for farmers everywhere with cloudy skies and lots of rain. At Smolak, it has caused many of our crops to be about two weeks behind the normal schedule, which might affect the CSA start this year. CSA’s are an interesting idea as originally conceived – they were created to mirror the ups and downs of what Mother Nature provides for us, and we have been fortunate that over time we've been able to deliver a [...]

We still have 2019 CSA shares available for purchase! Read more and sign-up here! Additional upgrades at the farm, and CSA season is almost here! As the flowers fall from our stone fruit trees, we see a sign that we are right on track. As a matter of fact, the bloom this spring was a very heavy one, which translates to a very abundant crop in this coming season! The spring rains have made it a challenge to keep ahead of the cultural issues, but the good news is that we are headed in the right direction. We are working [...]
