2019: The Year of Sustainability
Greetings, and Happy New Year!
With the start of this new year comes the start of something new for Smolak Farms as well, and I’m excited to share that this year, we are embarking on a program focused on sustainability.
Sustainability is defined as “how biological systems endure and remain diverse and productive. Today, it refers to the need to develop the sustainable models necessary for both the human race and planet Earth to survive.”
Over the course of this year and beyond, we will start to explain and show our commitment to this model of converting from a conventional program through Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to a new model with sustainability at its core. This will impact everything we do at the farm, from how we farm our crops to how we utilize our resources. We really want to focus on being good stewards of the land and conservationists all around.
We’ve also added some outstanding new employees who we’ll introduce you to in coming months, and we’ll encourage you to give them input about how we can improve, because after all, our goal is giving you a reason to return to Smolak Farms again and again!
What’s Happening Around the Farm in the Winter?
Even though the ground has frozen and most of us prefer to stay indoors this time of year, there is much to be done on a farm in the winter! We are starting to do many things: pruning apple trees, trimming raspberry bushes, weeding blueberry bushes, and most importantly, planning for the year ahead!
One of the major focuses this year will be revitalizing the animal education area and the educational programs, so watch for details on that.
We’ve also got some great new initiatives to share in the Farm stand, including:
- A new Dinner and Blues series, where we’ll feature a buffet dinner and music from the local pool of talented musicians
- Our first dinner is January 18, you can buy tickets here!
- Hot Chocolate and Make-Your-Own Sundae bars in the farm stand!
- Weekly menus with to-go items you can grab for a quick dinner
